Sydney has more than its fair share of ghost stories and tales of hauntings and paranormal activity. Many times the hauntings are surrounded by traumatic events. There are a number of guided ghost tours that happen in and around Sydney. With the number of buildings that are over 100 years old and many of them have been used as quarantine stations, insane asylums, overcrowded orphanages, and of course all the prison cells and convict built buildings add to the creep factor surrounding Sydney.
The ghost stories and hauntings reported at The Street With No Name are violent, gory, and sometimes horrific. This article details some heinous crimes and should not be read by those that are sensitive to such issues.
For those that love a good ghost story, and can handle some of the more delicate issues covered please continue reading.
When you stop at the Street With No Name you will be on the second leg of your haunted coach tour. The first stop in Annandale was The Abbey, a 50 room gothic mansion with reports of a lady in white who has been haunting the place for decades. The Abbey is also supposed to have windows and doors that open and close on their own.
The Street With No Name is a bit different. Many Sydneysiders grew up with The Street With No Name being a "no go zone". Urban folklore runs rampant around the zone and it has been used to frighten children into staying indoors and to fear ghosts for nearly 50 years.
The horrifying stories date back to 1968 when the string of monstrous crimes began. The Street With No Name is really a pathway running along side a light rail viaduct. The forest and foliage has nearly reclaimed the area and the spooky factor is palpable when you arrive. With so much violence in such a small area it is no wonder the reportings of hauntings, ghosts, and paranormal activity have been intense, and often.
The beginning of the spree of violence started when the body of a mutilated three year old boy was found half hidden in the plants and weeds. This murder remains unsolved today. Then in 1976 two more murders occurred at the site within seven months of one another. Both victims that time were 12 year old boys and their deaths were extremely violent, one being bludgeoned to death by a rock while the other was stabbed repeatedly.
Both boys were killed in the same spot and in 1977 an arrest was made and the man was charged with the murders of both twelve year old boys.
In the same year the boys were killed a girls body was discovered in the car park nearby. The urban legend surrounding this death is that she was the victim of one of the first ever Satanic killings in Sydney. This case is not solved and the details are not easy to get. The rumor mill is the biggest source of information for this case.
After eight years of extreme violence and the discovery of the bodies of four different children all heinously murdered the site became known for sightings, and being able to feel the very tension in the air. Children were warned repeatedly to stay away from the site.
Children and dogs seem to be smarter than the rest of us by default anyway. There are many reports of children and dogs behaving oddly when in the vicinity. Most children and adults have heeded the warning to steer clear of the area. One homeless man who was warned by authorities not to sleep in the area was not so lucky. In 2000 the man Reg Malvin was sleeping in the surrounding park when he met his demise. He too was bludgeoned to death.
Under the viaduct are storage rooms. One of the them nicknamed The Tomb after the body of the first twelve year old boy was found just outside the window. Near The Tomb many people have reported many different types of paranormal activity. The photographer that rented The Tomb as a photo studio reported hearing footsteps regularly. Many other people have reported seeing things that are not there, feeling nervous, and even feeling nauseous. One particularly sensitive person actually reported having sharp pains in the abdomen so bad near The Tomb that they doubled over from the pain.
Listening to the sounds of the pathway when you are in the vicinity is disturbing to most people. Reports of phantom footsteps are plentiful and reports of the energy just feeling wrong and bad happen all the time. Orbs of light have been spotted on regular occurrences and visitors to the sight wonder if they may be the soul of the children that were lost to violence on The Street With No Name.
