The Rocks
The Rocks is where Sydney and modern Australia itself started, on the south side of the harbour. Nowadays, there is a wide array of pubs, bistros and shops, but the star is the outdoor market that takes place every weekend throughout the entire year. Set in the lanes flanked by sandstone carved by the original settler convicts (hence the name), this is a real Sydney shopping institution, with more than 200 stalls selling anything from tablecloths to ear-rings.
Broadway Shopping Centre
Head out to Glebe and check out Broadway Shopping Centre for a great day out just 3km from Sydney CBD. You can easily find anything you need here – from groceries to fashion clothing to electronics. It’s a modern mall with many amenities so if you are staying nearby, remember to drop by!
Paddington Markets
Another local institution 40 years old now is Paddington Markets, a half-hour stroll up Oxford Street. Here, you will find stall after stall filled with fashion items and accessories, craft work in cotton, leather or sheepskin, and edgy or retro handmade clothing that you won’t find in the department stores. The markets are open every Saturday.
Queen Victoria Building
The Queen Victoria Building on George Street is worth visiting as much for the architecture as for the shopping, but you’ll love it even more if you crave fine fashion boutiques and a choice of stylish cafes and restaurants. QVB is perhaps Sydney’s most prestigious mall and features a huge indoor Christmas tree during the season.
The Intersection
Just round the corner from Oxford Street is The Intersection, self-styled home of Australian fashion. Whether you have heard of the labels or not, go there to see what tomorrow’s fashion icons will be wearing and buy the same for yourself. A series of leading-edge boutiques is mingled with the usual assortment of cafes and places just to people-watch.
The Star
Down at Darling Harbour, there’s The Star, Sydney’s best collection of international luxury-brand boutiques, not to mention a casino, the Lyric theatre and some of Sydney’s most vibrant upmarket nightlife.
Westfield Building
For shopping in the city centre, you need go no further than the Westfield building, more than 300 stores offering fashion, food and fun across seven levels, while if that sounds a little too shopping-intensive, try The Strand Arcade: a browser’s paradise with a rich and chequered history, this central mall provides a more relaxed environment in which to take in the delights of stores offering health and beauty products, fashion for children and men as well as the girls, antiques, and some wonderful gift shops.
Above all, don’t worry, wherever you shop, there will always be somewhere to sit and grab a coffee or two. Sydney takes refreshment as seriously as shopping!
