About the Sydney Opera House
The building took 14 years to construct and cost far more than the budget, partly because nothing like it had ever been attempted before. But Sydneysiders took the giant typewriter filled with oyster shells to their hearts and today are immensely proud of it; they love showing visitors around, outside,(actually, it’s best approached from a ferry coming into Circular Quay) and inside, where the Opera House operators run a series of guided tours daily (although the schedule can be disrupted when rehearsals are taking place).
Tours Inside the Sydney Opera House
The standard tour takes an hour, with interactive displays, and the guide shows you all the secrets under the sails, as these extraordinary roof shapes are officially known. There are more than a thousand rooms inside, so you won’t see everything, but you can get a great feel for the many individual theatres contained in the building.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the opening, there is a special tour that includes rare archive film footage. You can also combine the tour with a three-tier gourmet Tasting Plate eaten at leisure with some local wine outside on the terrace. The tours finish at 1700, but the tasting experience continues until late and is an ideal way to experience the general ambience of the Opera House site. There are also 30-minute guided tours in a multitude of languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French and German, all with essentially the same content as the English-language version.
If you seek a more personalised experience, there’s the chance of a tour backstage with a guide who promises to reveal what really goes on behind the footlights and give out some gossip on the things that go on when the stars are singing. There’s not a guarantee, but a high probability that you can get to stand on the stage itself and take a look at the stars’ dressing rooms.
The Ultimate Sydney Opera House Experience
And for the ultimate Opera House experience, why not follow up your tour of the building with a flight over it in a seaplane? See what the Opera House looks like from a thousand feet, head down to Manly and Palm Beach, then land in Rose Bay where a private water taxi whisks you back to land at Circular Quay. That’s a perfect day for you in Sydney!
