History, Her Story, Our Story – Bicentennial Dedication
Remembering the contribution made by Lachlan Macquarie in 1818, the Governor of NSW who initiated the construction of Parramatta Female Factory, which would house at least 500 convict women deported to Australia. The commemoration will be held on the 7th of July to rejoice and acknowledge the national significance of the most intact female convict sites down under. The factory was a place of riots, hardships and despair, being a marriage bureau, a labour exchange, and a place of textile manufactory. The stories of survival, hope and resilience held in this place go to the heart of Australian identity.
