Field Day
On the 1st of January, the Golden Features is all set to make his first ever experience this summer at the Field Day. Sydney Festival is an annual cultural celebration, scheduled to commence from 6th of January, with a whopping 47 free events and 9 new Australian works. Some of the key events to choose from, include ethereal underwater concert Aquasonic, London’s National Theatre, UK export Barber Shop Chronicles and Contemporary ballet tree of codes. Once again, Hyde Park will be hosting performances like the Glitterbox and a double decker Karaoke Carousel and ‘boylesque’ Briefs. Large scale artwork encompasses installations like Four Thousand Fish, where you can create sculptures made of ice that will be released back into Harbour.
Katharina Grosse
Indulge yourself in a rainbow wonderland when Carriageworks will be unveiling their major foyer installation, in association with the Anna Schwartz Gallery in Melbourne, with the addition of Katharina Grosse, an acclaimed German artist. She’s an expert in immersive, large-scale spray-painted works, in which she takes over industrial and urban environments, painting directly on their surfaces or draping packs of fabric for technicolour creation. Being a site specific work, the artist will cover the public space with 8250 metre square of fabric, transforming the canvas with visual effects.
2018 Sony World Photography Awards Sydney Entry
Showcasing the most awe-inspiring photographs from across the globe, the Sony World Photography Awards will be held this year on the 11th of January. It is one of the leading competitions in the industry, created by the World Photography Organisation. By giving an opportunity, visibility and international exposure to photographers from across the globe, the award celebrates the finest modern photography today. Basically, there are four competitions, including Professional with 10 categories, youth for photographers aged 12-19, and student focus.
FOMO Festival
This one-day, one stage festival on the 13th of January is an inevitable event, with the extensive line-up including the likes of Drezo, the Kite string Tangle, Tourist, SZU, enigmatic electronic producer ZHU, Haitian-Canadian DJ Kaytranada and trap producer RL Grime. The best part about this event is that there is only one stage, which implies there are no timetable clashes, and you can spend some quality time with your favourite acts. Sunset Cinema
The outdoor cinema season for 2018 is right here in Sydney, at the iconic North Sydney Oval. It is an ideal venue for outdoor cinema screenings, with its historic grandstand and expansive views of North Sydney. The two month season will start 18th of January, with the screenings including films like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Darkest Hour and Call Me By Your Name; comedy such as Pitch Perfect 3 and Downsizing. Your Summer Local is the theme for this year’s Sunset Cinema, with the event’s objective to support local charity by asking patrons to vote for a noble cause.
So Frenchy So Chic In The Park 2018
Do you fancy the idea of an ideal picnic with an abundance of European food, wine and champagne? This 20th of January 2018, So Frenchy So Chic in The Park is returning to celebrate Summer in a unique style, with all things French from wine and music to food and culture. Imagine the taste of French Wine, chilled Laurent-Perrier Champagne, slices of lardon, white wine, crispy potato cubes and French Tartiflette. There are plenty of kids activities as well including hopscotch, drum classes, Croquet, lawn games, bubble blowing, giant chess and face painting. Muriel’s Wedding The Musical
This is a musical adaptation of an Australian Classic, announcing the arrival of Muriel in Sydney. With pop music by Keir Nuttall and Kate Miller-Heidke, and an updated book by original screenwriter PJ Hogan, Wedding the Musical by Muriel is going to leave you with smiles for a long time. Directed by Simon Philips, this is an evolved and updated version of the original story. The show captures the very hedonism and liberation of Sydney that exists only in the eyes of those who have moved from smaller towns.
The Wizard of Oz
This January, the Wizard of Oz is coming to Capitol Theatre, presenting the London Palladium production of Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on a 1939 film. Visually, this stage reconstruct of MGM’s 1939 film will come with added songs. The local schedule will star Jemma Rix as the Wicked Witch of the West, Lucy Durack as Glinda the Good and Anthony Warlow as the Wizard. With her first leader role in a major musical, debutant Samantha Dodemaide will be playing Dorothy.
Eastwood Night Markets
Eastwood night markets are returning to Sydney for yet another season, with more stalls, entertainment and food. Held each Saturday, the vibrant lights will include a festive ambiance to the lively market as food stalls will be serving everything from Japanese-style treats and Turkish delights to noodles and pop cakes. If you enjoy shopping, there will be loads of fashion bargains, toys, jewellery and accessories on offer.
