Portrait Equality Exhibition Launch
Launching its own exhibition of family portraits, the Portrait Equality event on the 1st of May will witness the travelling photographers displaying their work by exhibiting photos of families in remote communities or developing countries. Along with the display of portraits, the photographer will tell the story behind the images, depicting how people spend their life in those parts of the world. In order to help raise funds for the cameras, the elegant prints of families in Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea will be put on sale through a silent auction.
The Australian Ballet Presents Nutcracker – The Story of Clara
Skilfully weaving together the charm and fantasy of an adored classic with a modern perspective and emotional depth, Nutcracker- The Story of Clara is coming to Joan Sutherland Theatre for a season starting 2nd of May. Nearing the end of her life, Clara relives her past, her travels, and her victories on stage. Discovering the textures and colours of Tchaikovsky’s marvellous score, Murphy explores the universal truth about love, loss and resilience. The setup designed by Kristian Fredrikson evokes the world of Clara, celebrating 25th anniversary of the “Gum-nutcracker”.
Sutherland Relay For Life 2017
Cancer is a plague that has no cure, but the best contribution that one can make is to raise funds in this event due to be held on 6th and 7th of May. Over 1,40,000 people will take part in a noble cause to fight against cancer. Back in 1985, one man by the name of Dr Gordy Klatt showed that an initiative taken by one person can make a big difference. Since then Relay for Life has emerged into the largest fundraising initiative for cancer, uniting local communities from over 20 countries. This is an opportunity to get together and have fun, while also raising awareness and funds.
Eastwood Night Markets
Packing more food, entertainment and stalls, the Eastwood Night Markets are back for another season. The vibrant lights will add a festive mood to the entire setting, as food stalls will serve everything delectable from Japanese treats to Turkish delights. If you are in for some shopping, there will loads of fashion bargains, toys, jewellery and accessories. Kids will be kept entertained with free face painting and roving entertainment. If you have some delicacies to showcase, you can book your own spot and put on a stall.
Sydney Comedy Festival 2017
With a line up that features the leading comedians of the country, the Sydney Comedy Festival is all set to make you roll on the floor laughing. Nazeem Hussain’s ‘Public Frenemy’ on the 12th of May is one of the best value shows of the festival, as he is known for his comedy sketches on Legally Brown and Balls of Steel. On the 13th of May, The Comedy Store will witness Cal Wilson’s ‘Things I’ve Never Said’, a figure that has been a part of this festival since the last 14 years. His punchy delivery and rapid up-beat talking style is seriously refreshing.
Julia Morris Lift and Separate at Sydney Opera House
The popular figure from ‘Australia Got Talent’ and ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ will now be coming live on stage on the 14th of May at the iconic Sydney Opera House. Her one woman show, ‘Lift and separate is sure to amaze people to the core. With over 3 decades of experience under her belt, Julia is the most polished performer in the country. You’ll be amazed by her exceptional storytelling abilities, as she presents here raucous romp in an interactive way.
Family Fun Day at the Campbelltown Steam and Machinery Museum
Time to travel back to the past and discover the lost era of Steam & Machinery. There was a time when machineries were ran by steams, cars dint have automatic gears and blacksmiths worked their trade. This event on the 20th and the 21st of May is an opportunity for a fun family day, with an objective to entertain and educate the public, and promote the preservation and restoration of the past. It houses a unique collection of 2-foot industrial railway that was once used, along with vintage steam and internal combustion engines.
Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon 2017
Just the perfect season for some running, the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon on the 21st of May is a fun run event for people of all ages and abilities. You need not be an expert runner, as it suits all levels of runners, covering a route around the inner city with impressive views of the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Around 12000 people are expected to participate in this 21km half marathon, which can split into 14km and 7 km legs, based on how challenging you want the running to be.
