A Look At The Most Private Beaches In Australia
With its huge coastline and many tropical gulfs and bays, Australia has some of the world’s best beaches and even the public ones outside metropolises like Sydney or Perth are hardly ever crowded. Indeed, you can surf, sunbathe or swim in many places on the coasts of the likes of Queensland or Western Australia for a whole day at a time without seeing another family. There are more beaches than people! But even in Sydney, world-famous for its relationship with the beach, there are gems that few know about. Try the private Store Beach at Manly’s North Head, which can only be reached by water. Hire a kayak from Manly Corso and paddle round to the beach for a secluded picnic lunch. Or Jibbon Beach, open to anyone but for a fee, which can be reached via Neil Street in Bundeena.
However, if what you look for is a touch of exclusivity, there are a range of private beaches with views to die for, especially on the east coast.
Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island, South Australia is probably Australia’s original luxury lodge. Situated on the country’s third largest island it is surrounded by some of the best beaches anywhere in the world, all secluded and filled with exotic wildlife as most of the island has been declared a wildlife sanctuary.
Australia’s most northerly resort is Lizard Island, a unique secluded paradise located on the Great Barrier Reef, 240 kilometres north of Cairns and starring more than 20 soft, sandy and very private beaches. The hotel on the island is a superb luxury property that offers private picnics with all the trimmings on its very, very private white-sand beaches as well as rips all over the adjacent Great Barrier Reef.
Also on the Queensland coast are the Hayman Resort in the Whitsundays, with its endless sparkling private sands, and the Beach Club on Hamilton Island, likewise endowed with completely secluded white stretch of sunkissed sand, fringed with the palm trees that create the impression of a true desert island
If you really crave seclusion, head for Port Douglas, where the Thala Beach lodge has its own bay where you can stroll barefoot alone on the hot coral sand beach for several kilometres. The beach is bookended by steep, lushly forested hills that create the illusion of this place being isolated entirely from the rest of the world. Feel like a castaway for an afternoon before returning to put your feet up with a sundowner.
