Australia attracts millions of tourists a year. This diverse and beautiful country combines western culture and extreme natural conditions. The diversity of wildlife is amazing and for this reason it is one of the most popular safari and diving destinations of the world.
However, just because it is already a vibrant country, doesn’t mean that you can’t make your experience of it different from the rest. The way you travel always affects the experience that you have. Public transport, traveling solo, or hooking up with some other travelers and cruising the coast can all be interesting experiences.

Backpack on a Budget – This is of course one of the key attractions of Australia. Backpacking your way around a vast country is an amazing way to travel. You can of course travel on a budget, by using local transport or help from friends you make along the way.
Buy a Car– This sounds a bit extreme, but hear me out. If you want to travel Australia, you are probably already planning on a long visit. While for a short visit renting isn’t too expensive, longer trips are not as affordable. Most cars in Australia are insured for any driver, so you can often buy a ready insured car and drive off. Hence, you can work out a buy-back deal, or just buy it and sell it off down the road. This is a great way to see spots of the beaten track and be free. As a group, it can also be extremely cheap and it is easy to find people up for an adventure.
Camper Van it – How cool would it be to tour Aus in a VW camper!? or at least something similar. As mentioned in the car part, this is easy and affordable. However, with a camper, you also don’t need accommodation for most of the journey and can undertake longer distances comfortably. That’s not to mention all the adventures and funny stories you will create along the way!
Greyhound or backpacker tour buses – know where you want to go. These are quite literally setup for people that want to travel around Australia. They go to all the main places and a few lesser known delights. Most are quite affordable, but what is often great about them is all the interesting people you meet along the way.
Motorbike – Of course, you need to know how to ride one. However, with the right gear and some reasonable weather, this can be an incredible way to tour. There is a sense of pure freedom and you get to see more along the route than you notice in a car. You also needn’t travel alone, as it should be easy enough to find a few fellow riders up for a road trip. There is also an incredible sense of respect and comradery between riders.
Hike – Walking isn’t always easy, but it can be a great way to explore new towns, cities, or the countryside. You keep fit and get to see more. While not realistic to tour fully under leg power, a lot hitchhike, or combine hiking with one of the other transport options mentioned above.
