About New Farm and Teneriffe

According to a census developed in 2011, New Farm currently has a population of almost 11,000 residents and it stretches over an area of 2 square kilometres. Teneriffe on the other hand has a population of approximately 5,000 residents.

Back in the days, Teneriffe was an important hub for trading wool and it served as a submarine base during the World War 2. In the 1880s, this neighbourhood was served by tram lines which were drawn by horses. Electrified tram lines were introduced in 1897. In 1909, the first wool store was built in the region and 3 others were opened in the following years. Until 1950, 9 more wool stores were built in Teneriffe, making this place an important trading post for wool. During the World War 2, approximately 60 large submarines stationed in Teneriffe.

With the passing of time, the wool stores were transformed into factories as well as residential apartments, making this neighbourhood and important riverside industrial hub. Lately, this suburb is preferred by a large amount of gay and lesbian people.
