About West End
This neighbourhood was named like this by the English settlers who came in Australia back in the days and found out that this place looks very similar to the West End of London. When tram lines were introduced in Brisbane, West End was the first neighbourhood in the city to be serviced by one. This happened back in 1885. The tram was pulled by horses in the beginning, but in 1897 the line was electrified and expanded. This tram line could reach the southern end of the Hardgrave Road, travelling via the Vulture Street. In April 1969, the tram line was closed.
This suburb is bounded by the Brisbane River on the west and south and it is adjacent to other suburbs in Brisbane called Highgate Hill and South Brisbane. Together, these 3 neighbourhoods create the peninsula of the Brisbane River while the West End suburb features an aboriginal name of Kurilpa which basically means the place where the water rat lives.
The West End suburb is characterized by a well-developed cafe and restaurant scene and it also features several notable shopping complexes, mostly situated on the Boundary Street. This suburb also features a high concentration of organic and ethnic grocery stores. The riverside factories are currently being sold in order to make space for building waterfront properties and residences. This project aims to increase the population density of the suburb and expand the economy of the city.
