About Ashfield

Ashfield is an inner western suburb in New South Wales, and is known for its highly multicultural population. The urban density is relatively higher for Australia, with a majority of dwelling being a mixture of Federation-era detached houses and low-rise flats. Ashfield Park is an extensive stretch of green space with wonderful facilities. Located between the main street of Parramatta Road and Ashfield, there’s a recently renovated playground, traditional gardens and sporting field. The playground contains all the playing equipment and some fascinating stuffs as well. With small climbing equipment, cubby house and the swings, there is a double slipping side that builds up as a rock wall. The big kids can also have some fun with the big net swing and huge rope climbing structure that presents a challenge.  

Within the playground fence, you have some great pathways for scootering as well. With heaps of gorgeous trees and ample seating, this makes for a pleasant afternoon. Outside the playground are the war memorial statue, traditional rose gardens and the sporting oval. There’s another set of swings, BBQ and covered eating area.

Sydney Heritage Fleet

Sydney Maritime Museum is known by the trading name of Sydney Heritage Fleet that has restored numerous historic vessels and operates them as well. This includes the likes of barque James Craig. It was honoured with the Maritime Heritage Award in the year 2003. The library, offices, displayed boats and model workshop are on Wharf 7 situated in Darling Harbour. Rozelle Bay is the fleet’s shipyard, and the James Craig is alongside the wharf. The museum was formed with an objective to preserve the 1902 VIP steam yacht Lady Hopetoun in Sydney.

The Hub House Diner

This dining spot is a central place for friends and family to gather. Perched nicely on the New Canterbury Road, it serves classic dishes to please all tastes. It is one of the best options in the area to get a taste of casual food served with a twist.  The head chef uses dehydrators, vacuum packs, thermo mixes and sous-vide immersion circulators to produce variations of staple items. The result is a fresh take on dishes, prepared from local produce.

For breakfast, you will find smoothies, fresh squeezed juices and Eggs Benny. The lunch menu offers a host of pleasures ranging from Zucchini Fritters and Popcorn Chicken to the Crispy Bird Burger, which is a chicken fillet topped with gruyere and smoked bacon. It is served with chipotle aioli, onion, gherkin and slaw. If you are looking for a healthy alternative, try the Smoked Salmon Rye Sandwich and Black Rice Salad with dried figs, infused orange oil, watercress and pecans.

St John the Baptist Anglican Church

St John’s Church was founded in 1840, and is known to be the oldest surviving building in Ashfield, having been built at a time when subdivision increased population density to turn the place into a town. Built on a land donated by Elizabeth Underwood, it was the first church built along Parramatta Road, which linked the colonial town of Parramatta and Sydney. The earliest remaining parts are one of the designs by architect Edmund Blacket, who later became popular for his church architecture.

The extensive church ground contains a cemetery with the remains of many significant residents of the town. Near the entrance is the only tribute to Australian Air Force Cadets, occupying a prominent position. The site has been listed on the Register of the National Trust of Australia and the Local Environment Plan Heritage Schedule. It is one of the three churches, along with Haberfield, St Oswald’s, Five Dock and St Albans. Over the years, the church had a total of 18 rectors.

Pratten Park

Opened in September 1912, the Pratten Park is a sporting complex that was named after Herbert Pratten.  The first ever rugby league match that was played here was Annandale against Western Suburbs. It has been a home to the Western suburbs league team, who played here continuously from 1912 to 1966 and sporadically over the 2 decades. The Park has also hosted National Soccer League matches, and for a very brief period in the 80s, it was the home ground of Sydney Olympic FC.

Ashfield Aquatic Centre

This project is currently under refurbishment and is expected to open soon. The facility will include community green spaces with landscaping, covered seating, a retail space, a 1000 square metre gym, a crèche, steam, a new sauna, changing rooms, a cafe and a new children’s leisure pool. Kids will really enjoy the atmosphere at this place.
