Bankstown is a suburb towards the south-western part of Sydney, 20 km towards the west of central business district, and is located in the local government region of Canterbury-Bankstown Council. Before European settlement, much of the area was occupied by the Cumberland Plains Woodland, with the Turpentine ironbark forest covering majority of space that is known today as Bankstown. It was initially occupied by the Bediagal people, with their land bordering the Darung and Dharawal people. The indigenous inhabitants were strongly against the British settlers. With a number of killings and imprisonment in 1816, the resistance ceased.
Bankstown Memorial Park
One of the key attractions in the city of Sydney, the Bankstown Memorial Park stands within the land that was initially known as Fripp’s Paddock. It is one of the first settlements in Bankstown, and a section of a hundred acres land owned by the Fripp Family during the city council’s land acquiring in 1923. It was established as a park in the memory of Bankstown residents who served in the army during the first World War, and the subsequent wars that followed.
Bankstown City Gardens
Being a part of the Memorial Park, the Bankstown City Gardens is a place of historical significance with lots on offer. The Telstra Museum

The museum displays the development of the telecommunication system, from modern telephone network to the time when Morse code was used.
This popular landmark in the suburb of Bankstown is a heritage-listed water tower, located roughly 14 miles to the west of Sydney CBD. This elevated reservoir was constructed on reinforced concrete piers, and is known to be one of the oldest of its kinds that still exists. The key feature of the reservoir is its eclectic decorative attribute, which you may not find in other reservoirs. Built in the year 1920, the reservoir has been serving a large section of the South-Western Sydney.
As it is related to rotunda, it is backed up by decorative arches and concrete pillars encircling the establishment. The reservoir has a concrete rectangular parapet wall, instead of a handrail at the top.
Paul Keating Park
Named in remembrance of the former Prime Minister of Australia, Paul Keating, the Park is a wonderful spot for a family day out. Having born and brought up in Bankstown, Paul held the Blaxland’s federal seat for over 2 decades. He was born in a working-class, and left schooling at 15, as he was selected to the House of Representative at the age of 25. Some of the features of the park include sheltered play equipment, Exeloss and an amphitheatre.
Sir Joseph Banks Statue
It was in the year 1980, when the city of Bankstown was officially proclaimed, and the Sir Joseph Banks Statue commemorates the occasion. The area was named after the botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who sailed along with Captain Cook on the Discovery Voyage for 3 years. During this period of time, he collected scientific and botanical specimens at the Botany Bay. After his return to England, his growing status as a scientist, combined with his passion for the settlement at Botany Bay, had a significant impact on the decision to send the first navy to Australia.
