The Brett Whiteley Studio
The home and workplace of Australian artist Brett Whiteley, this studio and exhibition space was initially a warehouse that was bought by the artist in 1985. He lived there until 1992, breathing his last in Thirroul. In 1995, the NSW Government bought the space and it was opened as a public space, managed by NSW Art Gallery. The ownership was passed to Gallery, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the studio. On visiting this place, you will be provided a unique glimpse into the practices of the artist, with a well-preserved studio, the way it would have been during his lifetime. It features graffiti wall covered with images and quotes, collection of reference books, art equipment and unfinished paintings. There’s a small gallery shop with merchandise, posters and postcards on sale.
Tap Gallery
Been around for 2 decades, Tap Gallery is an artist run space, which was initially housed in Taylor Square Darlinghurst. Lesley Dimmick, the founder of this property, which now operates on Palmer Street, gave her everything to the venue, which is there for artists from all backgrounds. It is a defining ground for artisans who want to promote themselves. Tap guides and supports artists on a journey, whether they have been there for years or just beginning to take shape. They also provide a wealth of knowledge that is given to someone who needs it. You will always find something happening at Tap, including comedy classes, clown classes, art courses, Sunday Tango with Tango, weekly art shows, Sunday Tap sessions, Noise on film and art & craft markets.
Chinese Presbyterian Church
Also known as CPC in abbreviated form, the Chinese Presbyterian Church is the arguably the oldest Chinese church in the country. The church has a congregation of almost 600 people meeting in worshipping services catering to the languages of Mandarin, English and Cantonese, and seeks to reach out to the Sydney’s Chinese community. Following the 1860s Gold Rush in Victoria, Chinese churches came into the picture, with the CPC tracing its foundation to the Presbyterian Chinese Mission. Given the influx of Chinese immigrants in Sydney at that time, the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales formed the mission.
