And, as you will see, there is no shortage of big music events in Melbourne and surrounding areas this year.
The Town
Just a couple of hours drive from Melbourne, in Strathbogey Ranges, Easter weekend also celebrates one of the craziest, wackiest experiments to ever hit Australia’s festival circuit. This is where the rest of the world takes a backseat and like-minded folk join for the enjoyment life’s simplest pleasures. Under the Easter full moon, funky tunes and massive partying take place in this parody village. The experience takes place among awesome set design and absurd theatrics and is set to music fitting of such an event. This is one you will never forget!
Golden Plains Festival
Taking place in mid-March, about 110 minutes from Melbourne, in Meredith, Victoria, this is actually an autumn Festival (Australia’s autumn differs from North America’s as far as during what time of year it occurs). That said, the weather should be stable and warm for festival offerings such as amazing food, an electric musical line-up, and a solid party atmosphere. From sunrise until well after sunset, some of the most talented acts ever will grace the stage.
Strawberry Fields
Depending on your age, you may recognize Strawberry Fields from an old Beatles tune. This celebration of creative expression, sound, and art takes place in the Australian bush, just a few hours from Melbourne, for three days every November. Festivalgoers will experience a diverse selection of breakthrough and renowned electronic music from overseas and locally. It’s easy to lose yourself in this sensory feast that includes forum discussion, workshops, live performance art, artistic installations, numerous eclectic market stalls, world-class decor, soul shaking sound, and much more.
St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival
Taking place all over Australia, this festival makes a stop in Melbourne with its revered, leading new Seminole music. If you’re looking for unique setting, are curious as to what’s going on with music lovers and appreciators in the world today, and wish to experience live music like never before, don’t miss the St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Though the festival itself took place on February 9 of 2019, Laneway brings you other acts throughout the year such as the following: From March 3 (Sunday) through March 7 (Thursday) Melbourne will host The Internet and Pond, in 2019. April 24 through May 10, Billie Eilish will make appearances.
Rainbow Serpent
It seems like all the really great music festivals are just a couple of hours outside of Melbourne. And Radio Serpent, arguably one of the most popular festivals in Australia, is no exception. If you consider yourself a music festival junkie, this end of January event is a must-see. Though too late for 2019’s festival, you do have plenty of time to plan your excursion for next year’s Rainbow Serpent. Festivalgoers experience a unique combination of relaxation and healing, spiritual discussion, performance, art, music, and more. What used to be nothing much more than an electronic music festival has become an opportunity to celebrate harmony, community, and nature.
Pitch Festival
In Victoria (80 minutes north of Melbourne), Carlton, and Lake Wooroonook, from March 8 through the 11th, local and international artists thrill festivalgoers with their signature sounds. For four days music aficionados can enjoy contemporary electronic music steeped in beautiful landscape and visual arts.
Let Go Fest
Taking place in Mornington, Victoria, at the beginning of February (so plan for next year) the Let Go Fest offers an amazing day out with friends. Enjoy various genres, multiple stages, and lots of blue sky. Acts that have performed previously include Hayden James, Set Mo, Rufus, and other Australian heavyweights.
Earthcore
There’s still plenty of time to plan to attend this late November music festival in Pyalong, Victoria. Across five days, festivalgoers can revel in music taking place on no less than five epic stages after a brief one-hour drive from Melbourne. Get a group of friends together and make this festival a way of life – forgetting the rest of the world, for its duration.
Babylon Festival
In Carapooee West, Victoria, this mid-March festival features lifestyle camping and enchanting music. It takes place over three days, deep in the heart of the Australian wilderness. Babylon Festival features electronic music artists, international live acts, and more. This inspired creation of talent takes place in an atmosphere of community exploration, mindfulness, and unique world of art.
Beyond the Valley
Get ready to mark your calendars for one of the biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations to ever grace South-Eastern Victoria (outside Melbourne by about 75 minutes). This Lardner Park, four-day festival is a New Year’s Eve celebration extravaganza. Technically, it runs from December 28 through 1 January, and this spectacular site will host thousands upon thousands of music and festival lovers. Internationally and nationally acclaimed artists will perform on the incredible 60-metre-wide stage. This magnificent stage features not just stellar acts, but sensational lighting, breath-taking visuals, and music that you will be singing all the way home. End 2019 or start 2020 off right with this must-attend music opportunity.
Stereosonic
This festival used to take place in not only Melbourne but Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and Sydney. Unfortunately, it is no longer gracing Australia with its festivities. However, Ultra will be coming to Sydney and Melbourne as of 2019, so watch for it. We mention it simply because of its grandeur as one of the wildest, largest, and most iconic electronic music festivals to ever take place in Australia. In its time, it was the best of the best. Maybe someday, if Australia is fortunate, it will return.
No matter what festivals you decide to attend, particularly if you pick a location that is one to two hours outside of Melbourne, you will likely find bus charter in Melbourne to be your best bet for dependable transportation.
