Insider Tips on Sydney’s Dining – From Splurge to BBQ

Visitors to Sydney generally agree on two things: the choice and quality of eating out anywhere in the city is fantastic; but it’s not cheap! Like any world city, Sydney has its share of fine and expensive dining venues; but it’s also possible to dine extremely well on a more limited budget. Here are some suggestions:

Food market in SydneyA staple of Sydney’s haute cuisine is Tetsuya’s, which offers a unique menu based on the Japanese philosophy of using natural seasonal flavours, but enhanced by classic French technique. Tetsuya himself was recently voted one of the world’s most influential chefs by a European panel of judges. The Kent Street restaurant is set in a Japanese-style garden for perfect harmony.

If you wish to dine with a view of the Opera House and Sydney Harbour instead, you cannot do better better than Quay at The Rocks. This ultra-smart venue has won more gongs than anywhere else in Australia and sits comfortably in the Top 50 Restaurants of the World listings. You’ll need to book well ahead, but don’t be surprised if you arrive to find the food too beautiful on the plate to contemplate eating it!

But if you crave the views but want to escape the city, head to Jonah’s on the Northern Beaches – and go for lunch to enjoy the scenery.

Chinatown not surprisingly offers mouthwatering dishes at good value. For the fun of the location, go to iconic Bondi Beach and sample Mojos Tapas Bar – it’s not so expensive as it looks and the food is great!

Sydney is well known for its backpacker bars and breakfast all day, brunch is highly popular in this category. A good Aussie breakfast will last you most of the day and doesn’t break the bank. In the evening, try some of the many ethnic cuisines available: African restaurants (think Ethiopian or Ghanaian for something different) offer dishes that are very reasonable and usually delicious, while Korean food is catching on. There are many Thai and Japanese restaurants around Sydney too, although they tend to be a little more pricey.

Go to the fresh food markets, buy your own and cook it the Aussie way! BBQs can be found in many public parks and at beaches (but be very careful about no-fire rules at certain times of the year). For super seafood, go to the Fish Markets in Pyrmont (within walking distance of Darling Harbour). For bargains in meat – especially delicious Australian lamb and beef – try Paddy’s Markets at Homebush on Friday and Saturday.

There’s more to food and cuisines that you will find out about when you book our bus charter in Sydney. Our drivers know the best places to bring you for dining and even if you want to enjoy a unique BBQ in Sydney, we can bring you to the markets where the freshest produce will be waiting for you!
